Zuvor war das im Zweiten Weltkrieg teilbeschädigte historische Universitätsgebäude Augusteum (zusammen mit der unversehrten Paulinerkirche) gesprengt worden, um Platz für die Neubebauung zu schaffen. Im Hintergrund die Nikolaikirche (l) sowie das Leipziger Opernhaus (r) am Augustusplatz.
