Neubauten in Plattenbauweise prägen das Bild von Berlins neuer Mitte - hier Blick über den Alexanderplatz in Richtung Karl-Marx-Allee. Vereinzelt sind noch ein paar Altbauten zu erkennen, von denen nicht viele erhalten geblieben sind. Moderne Wohn- und Bürogebäude sowie eine großflächige Umgestaltung des Alex sollten Ost-Berlin als Hauptstadt der DDR das Antlitz einer sozialistischen Großstadt verleihen.
