Berlin on 04.11.1989 experienced the largest demonstration for another GDR. A half to one million citizens march through downtown, past the People's Chamber and Council of State building to a final rally at the Alexanderplatz. Remember by Berlin artists as a demo for more press freedom, the action designed to protest against the prevailing conditions in the country. Ever since that day, the rulers can no longer act past the people. Five days later, the fall of the Wall initiated the later end of the GDR. // Plakate mit politischen Forderungen werden am Berliner Palast der Republik mit dem Sitz der Volkskammer vorbei getragen. Berlin erlebt am 04.11.1989 die größte Demonstration für eine andere DDR. Eine halbe bis eine Million Demonstranten ziehen durch die Innenstadt, vorbei an Volkskammer und Staatsratsgebäude zu einer Abschlußkundgebung auf dem Alexanderplatz. Angemeldet von Berliner Künstlern als Demo für mehr Pressefreiheit gestaltete sich die Aktion zum Protest gegen die herrschenden Verhältnisse im Land. Spätestens seit diesem Tag können die Regierenden nicht mehr am Volk vorbei handeln. Fünf Tage später leitete der Fall der Mauer das spätere Ende der DDR ein. After studying at the Breslau School of Arts and Crafts in 1925/26 and at the State Academy of Arts and Crafts there under Otto Mueller, Herbert Sandberg worked for various Berlin newspapers from 1928 to 1933 (Berliner Tageblatt, Wahrer Jacob, etc.). In 1929 he joined the Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists (ARBKD). Due to his membership in the KPD (since 1931) and his active opposition to the Nazis, he was imprisoned in Brandenburg Penitentiary in 1934 on the charge of "preparing for high treason". From 1938 until the end of the war Sandberg was imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp as a Jew and communist. In 1944 he created 18 drawings from soot there, which he later published in the cycle A Friendship. After the Second World War, Sandberg became co-editor of the satirical magazine "Ulenspiegel" with Guenther Weisenborn from December 1945 to August 1950. From 1949 he created numerous stage designs, including for the Deutsches Theater, the Volksbuehne and the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. From 1954 to 1957 Herbert Sandberg was editor-in-chief of the magazine Bildende Kunst. He then worked as a freelancer in Berlin. In 1972 he was appointed professor and taught as a guest lecturer at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Aufgrund seiner Mitgliedschaft in der KPD (seit 1931) und wegen aktiver Nazigegnerschaft wurde er 1934 mit dem Tatvorwurf "Vorbereitung zum Hochverrat" in das Zuchthaus Brandenburg inhaftiert, von 1938 bis Kriegsende war Sandberg als Jude und Kommunist im KZ Buchenwald eingekerkert. 1944 entstanden dort 18 Zeichnungen aus Ruß, die er später im Zyklus Eine Freundschaft veröffentlichte.Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg wurde Sandberg zusammen mit Günther Weisenborn von Dezember 1945 bis August 1950 Mitherausgeber der Satirezeitschrift "Ulenspiegel". Ab 1949 entstanden zahlreiche Bühnenbilder, so unter anderem für das Deutsche Theater, die Volksbühne und das Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. Von 1954 bis 1957 war Herbert Sandberg Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift Bildende Kunst. Danach arbeitete er freischaffend in Berlin. 1972 wurde er zum Professor ernannt und unterrichtete als Gastdozent an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig.
